This exhibition brings together the work of three artists, Danny Wilson, Marijke Vasey and Catherine Hughes. "The Everyday Catalogue" takes place at the European Information Office, an unusual listedbuilding, situated on a side street just off Parliament Square. Away from the hectic rush of the city is a new encounter with the ordinary and extrodinary. All three artists openly explore everyday objects, places or artefacts that might otherwise be overlooked; discarded holiday slides, an empty "House of Fun" and a forgotten bag of groceries. Catherine Hughes ' exquisite tiny watercolours portraya dreamy universe of debris. Danny Wilson's questioning photographs are often shown as aninstallation, juxtaposing the monumental, the mundane and the ephemeral. Marijke Vasey's paintings assemble her source materials into a fantastical mise-en-scene that is both visually seductive and physically confrontational.

We had a meeting at some crazy spanish bar in Hanway street last night (good choice of venue Lisa) which was wicked and wierd. Wicked cause we all got to have a few red wines, catch up and get the diary out, wierd because of the music harps etc. The next meeting will be next Thursday and the people who are having crits are:

Swap Shop

We, Ed's Space collective would like to begin by saying how much we enjoyed our collective’s first ever event. The ‘Art Swap Shop’ was held at the Chisenhale Gallery’s Education room on Thursday 18th September 2005.

For those of you unfortunate ones who weren’t able to attend this brilliant event, I’ll tell you the story of what happened…..

The evening began enthusiastically at around 7pm when sprightly artists, students and Chisenhale goers arrived, accompanied by their artworks. They were then forced into posing for a portrait/mugshot holding their work. (We didn’t really force them; they enjoyed it, especially having their images projected for all to see). Swap Shop’s very own art handler Nat, then coaxed guests to part with their art and set about exhibiting the little beauties around the room.

Once everyone had settled comfortably into their wine (thank you Switzerland), the music began…The festivities kicked off with our first busker, Kevin Pearce on his acoustic guitar, with vocals, indulging us with some of his ‘emotionally drenched ballads’. There seemed to be a great deal of respect for all of our musicians who played (not that we expected abuse!) but most people sat and watched each act intently, viewing each musician’s set as an artistic performance, and rightly so, This gave some of the newer musicians the confidence they needed from a captive and engaged audience.

Our second songster, Louis, (vocals & acoustic guitar) then gave us a variety of his seemingly intense and atmospheric material.

As people continued arriving, the Education Room by this point was laden with a diverse collection of art work, ranging from photographs, paintings & prints to cards, comics, cds and the unexpected but very welcome…a cake. To Ed’s delight, much of the work was personally contributed from the artists’ own collection and particularly impressive were those pieces made especially for Swap Shop.

Our next busker up was Charlie Shultz from New York, (guitar, vocals and harmonica) whose lively, folksy tunes really warmed up the already sweaty room. My flat mate John was even kind enough to step in with a few of his Bob Dylan renditions.

At around 8.30, Gabs, our dynamic raffle caller and his alluring assistant Debbie McGee got the swapping underway. With the help of Ed’s very own compere, John, they requested the audience reclaim their art pieces, but only for a brief and emotional farewell. Two by two, guests were picked randomly by way of a raffle to take the stage for the great exchange! Some swappers were a bit bashful and modest with their swap and amongst some there was an apparent sizing up of their recipients’ work as though trying to judge the worthiness of their own work for the trade. To be honest, I think most people were more excited about the donation of their own work than questioning whether their new acquisition was of the same quality. The majority of people seemed to enjoy the physicality of the experience, the random pairing of two artists acquainting each other with their own ideas. Some people shook hands politely, others hugged and some even kissed. (Remember, if any beautiful relationships have blossomed from that night you have Ed to thank). Just to add a bit more frivolity to the chance swapping, the occasional ticket holder would receive a star prize which meant a go in the lucky dip. (Obviously the slightly low key contents in our barrel of shredded paper was not in any way meant to be in competition with the fabulous art works that people brought along).

Our penultimate music act was National Snack. An extremely vibrant trio of vocalists with acoustic guitar. Then to end the night, we had Lascivia Decay, aka Alex Hepburn in semi-bejewelled drag. (S)he gave us a fusion of music and performance with vocals and electric guitar.

As is tradition with most Chisenhale parties, the merriment brimmed over into the Palm Tree Pub in Mile End Park.

With such an array of talented and enthusiastic entertainers and musicians alongside a collection of personal and considered art work, the night of Swap Shop was bound to be an enjoyable one. Thank you to everyone who made the effort to come and to those who put so much thought into the work they brought along. To out talented buskers for keeping the night so upbeat and thank you to Gabs, Debbie and John our hosts. Not forgetting the invaluable help from our volunteers who made the night run so smoothly.

Ed says: What a wonderfull night of swapping it was. Once welcomed into the space, Ed-spacers had their photos taken with the artwork they were going to swap. This is not a photograph of me by the way, this is John the compere. ohh look, in the background you can see a TV showing 4 hours the bbc television program Bargain Hunt...

Ed says: Here's Hannah and Nat, doing a stella job as photographer and Art handler. This is what it looked like as you had your photo taken. Thanks Hannh and Nat!
